SUNSETS & SILHOUETTES KICKSTARTER:

There is only 16 days left of our Kickstarter campaign and still some way to go.

We’re currently sitting at £1,725 out of £2,500. Its getting to that crucial point where we’re sooooo close, but if we don’t cross the line it will all be for nothing as Kickstarter won’t fund our project unless we hit that total!

For those of you who don’t know, our Executive Producer John Macdonald tragically passed away last week resulting in us losing all our initial funding. However we’ve reached a point of no return and HAVE to push through with the shoot next week. My AMAZING cast and crew have bent over backwards and are doing their utmost to push ahead, chipping in their own cash where they can to cover the costs of their departments. This is why it is even MORE important that we hit this target.

I’ve decided to put these up for those that wonder how we approach our recording sessions given our penchant for tempo changes, time signature changes and love for a natural organic sound.

Ever wondered how we set about recording a Katerwaul song?

First we rehearse and rehearse till we know the songs inside and out and have edited everything that doesn’t need to be there out. Then once we know the songs better than we know ourselves we record these live instrumental tracks.

After that its a case of adding the vocals and some additional instrumentation, but essentially the back bone of the recordings are all live.

I guess this is what Katerwaul would sound like if we were an instrumental post-rock band.

So here it is, warts and all. I hope it gives you a nice insight into how we like to work.

Sunsets & Silhouettes Kickstarter Campaign:

Only three days ago we started a Kickstarter Campaign to raise some additional funds to our micro budget for my latest short film project.

We’ve so far managed to raise nearly half of what we are looking for, but there is still some way to go yet before we reach our target.

CARIÑO TO PREMIERE AT 2013 GSFF

It is with great pleasure that we can announce that our latest production Cariño will be premiering at the 2013 Glasgow Short FIlm Festival. To commemorate the announcement we’ve released the latest in a series of posters I have designed. The image of Julian is a direct still from the 4K footage shot on the RED one MX and edited in Photoshop.

Cariño is written and directed by Shaun Hughes, starring Julian Nicholson and Bhasker Patel with cinematography by Hakon Palsson and music by Tim Courtney

SUNSETS & SILHOUETTES

SYNOPSIS: Bethany is an elderly woman, slowly dying in the comfort and loneliness of her own home. Jessica struggles through a life of abuse as an ageing prostitute well past her prime. Their lives change by the arrival of Matthew a 40 something with a dark secret.

I’ve had this short film project on the go for a while now and things are starting to come to fruition. I’ve got most of the crew sewn up but a few positions left to fill. I’m still looking for an AD and a Production Designer in particular, so get in touch if you’re interested, tim@factotumfilms.co.uk

We’ve just put out a casting call this week for various characters. I won’t bore anyone with the details but if you’re an actor, male or female, between the ages of 35 and 80 then drop me a line and I’d be happy to send you more details.

Above is the casting poster I designed to generate some interest in the project. The film has strong themes of birth, death and mortality which is reflected in the sunrise/sunset.

I’m really excited by this project and hope we manage to secure the funding to get it well and truly under way.

The cashier tells me I’m not allowed to take the basket further than the conveyor belt.

“Well if there was more space here in which to bag my things, or if you didn’t scan stuff so fast I wouldn’t need to bring the basket this far.” I tell him pointing to the table top by the window “I’ll bag my stuff there and leave that basket if that’s alright?”.

“No, you must leave at end.” He tells me.

I decide not to argue, instead ignoring him. Then some toothless polish woman grabs my shoulder and spins me round and points at the stack of baskets at the end of the checkout. She says something through her gums in her mother tongue.

Anyway, the cashier starts throwing my good through the scanner and onto what can only be described as a shelf. I start piling the goods into my basket. I minor victory for me I think to myself.

“Do you have ID my friend?” he asks holding a bottle of Henry Weston’s. I dig into my bag and produce my passport. He studies the passport for what seemed like two weeks.

**DING DONG** “Duty manager to the check out please, Duty Manager to the check outs.”

The manager takes his time, all the while the toothless Polish Grandmother of ten firing me the gypsy stare of death. When he does arrive he looks at my passport, gives the cashier a confused look.

“Aye, that’s fine” the manager says.

“Ok. I just want to check. It say he is twenty nine” he replies.

“What’s your date of birth?” the Manager asks me.

“Thirtieth of the first eighty three” I say.

The manager hands me back my passport.

I angrily make my way to the table top to arrange my shopping into my bag and leave. The bottle of kitchen cleaner bursts in my bag on the way home. Story of my life.

I was recently commissioned to put together this trailer for The National Library of Scotland. It went LIVE today and the opening of the exhibition is tomorrow night. The exhibition will be open to the public at The National Library on George IV Bridge, Edinburgh from Friday 15th June till the 28th October.

SAY Awards In-stores: Happy Particles and Aidan Moffat

This weekend some of the Scottish Album of the Year Award hopefuls performed a series of In-store shows across Glasgow. Unfortunately due to public transport I missed Conquering Animal Sound at Love Music and only caught the end of Graeme Ronald’s solo Remember Remember set at HMV on Buchanan Street. The one song I did catch was a belter though.

Here are some snaps I managed to get from Happy Particles set at HMV and Aidan Moffat’s performance at the Apple Store.

The winner of the first SAY Award will be announced this week.
